NU Start Basics

NU Start 2008 (July 27 - August 14)

Join us for NU Start 2008. Move-in is July 27 and the program ends on August 14. UNL classes begin on August 25, but NU Start students move into their fall assignments at the conclusion of NU Start. Some NU Starters choose to stay on campus during this Interim period.

NU Start Courses

ENGL180 (3 credits): Introduction to Literature
General introduction for beginning students to the understanding and appreciation of the principal forms of literature: poetry, drama, and fiction. Does not satisfy the freshman English (composition) requirement.
Please note: ENGL 180 meets the general education requirement for most majors on campus. Students who have college credit for English composition (dual-credit courses or AP test credit) are eligible to complete ENGL180.

LIBR110 (1 credit): Introduction to Library
This independent course teaches students the fundamentals of library use and research tools available on the UNL campus.
Please note: LIBR110 meets the general education requirements for the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Fine and Perforating Arts, Journalism, and some areas of Education and Human Services.

2008 NU Start Fees

Room & Board (includes meal plan): $469
Tuition & Fees: Resident $837.73    Non-Resident: $2173.73
Program registration: $200

Fees do not include textbooks. Program registration fee includes all program activities, and is non-refundable. During the program, some students participate in optional activities with limited costs which are not included in program fees.

Special arrangements have been made so that recipients of the following scholarships may use awards to cover the tuition portion of NU Start cost: Regents, JD Edwards, Theisen, New Nebraskan, and National Merit / Achievement Finalist. The credit hours earned in NU Start will count towards the total number of hours subject to the stipulations of each scholarship.

A note about payment for NU Start: The $200 program fee is due upon registration. In an effort to help NU Starters become accustomed to using their University account all other fees are assessed to the student's bill in two parts. Tuition is due in June and room & board is due in July. Any applicable scholarships are automatically applied to the student's bill.

A Day in the Life of a NU Starter

Wondering what NU Start is really like?

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I take classes other than ENGL 180 and LIBR 110? All NU Starters take these two courses; substitutions are not possible.
  • I got credit for English Composition while I was in high school. That's the same thing as ENGL 180, right? Nope. ENGL 180 is a Literature course and counts differently than English composition.
  • Can I go home on the weekends? You have free time scheduled during the program, and that time is your own, but you are expected to participate fully in all NU Start activities, many of which are on the weekends.
  • Can I live off campus during NU Start? NU Start is a residential program; you'll want to be in the residence halls to hang out with your new friends!
  • Can I pick my roommate? We do not accept roommate requests for NU Start.
  • How hard are the classes? Every professor is different, but they try to be balanced for NU Start. However, expect more work than you saw in high school, and since the program is only 3 weeks, you'll need to be sure to manage your time well. You will have study hours to make sure you can get everything done.
