The prospect of leaving the small town I grew up in to go to a big university was very daunting to me when I was in high school. I didn't know how I would ever find new friends, figure out my class schedule, get used to dorm life, or even be able to find my classes without getting lost.
When I got the NU Start brochure in the mail, I realized that it was the solution to all my worries. I know I sound like an infomercial, but I sent in my application the next day.
When I got here for NU Start, I was still a little apprehensive. That feeling went away really fast, though, as I moved in and met new people. By the second day, I felt like I knew what to do and where to go.
During NU Start I not only learned everything that I'd wanted to, I also had a lot of fun. I loved the activities we attended together, but most of all I enjoyed just getting to know people better. The spontaneous slumber party and crazy runs to Super-K will always stick in my memory. NU Start gave me a glimpse of how fun and exciting college life can be.
I didn't completely realize what a great experience NU Start had been until regular classes started in the fall. On the first day, when all the other freshmen were wandering around hopelessly searching for their classes, I actually knew where I was going. I already had friends here at college and the experience I needed to start out first semester with confidence.
I wish that everyone could attend NU Start. I think it is one of the best, and most fun, ways for an incoming freshman to prepare for a successful college career.

I participated in NU Start so I could meet other incoming freshmen, learn what it is like to live with a roommate, see what a college professor's expectations are, and learn my way around the campus. I am from a southern suburb of Chicago, and I didn't know anybody else from my high school that was planning on attending NU. NU Start provided me with a chance to become close with other incoming freshman. Despite the fact that NU Start was last summer, I still hang out with the other participants on a regular basis.
The program also gave me a great chance to get to know Lincoln. The NU Start participants from Lincoln helped me learn my way around town. On the weekends, we went places such as the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha and to a high ropes adventure course.
In NU Start, it doesn't even feel like you are taking classes. There is time in the evening that is designated as study time, so homework time is already built into your schedule. Also, because everybody in the program is doing homework at the same time, study time is a lot of fun!
I would definitely recommend NU Start to all incoming freshman. It is a great chance to make new friends and expand your horizons. If you decide to participate in the program, you won't be sorry.
