What is the NU Start Learning Community? The four elements of the title describe the program accurately.
NU:
This is a program specifically tailored to the needs of new students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Experienced teachers and staff members will introduce you to the UNL campus, to the resources of the University, and to the academic life you are about to begin.
Start:
The program will give you an early start on your course work at UNL, offering English 180, Introduction to Literature. This is a standard course accepted widely across the university for general education credit. Also included is Library 110, a 1 credit hour course in information discovery and retrieval, required by many colleges at UNL. You will enter the Fall semester with four hours of credit toward your degree and a solid experience in the kind of work expected of a university student.
Learning:
NU Start offers an intensive and challenging learning experience in a supportive atmosphere that is intended to help each student succeed to the best of his or her ability. We hope that you will work harder and learn more in these three weeks than you may have thought possible and have fun doing it. In the process, you might just learn some things about yourself that will serve you well in this new stage of your life.
Community:
This isn't just a nice word to make NU Start sound attractive; it is the essence of the program. The Office of Undergraduate Studies, Student Affairs, Summer Sessions, New Student Enrollment, University Housing, academic departments, and the University Library cooperate to make this experience one you will never forget. Specially selected Program Assistants make your introduction to residence hall living smooth and enjoyable. Small NU Start classes allow faculty and students to work closely together in a mutual experience of learning and self-development. Students help one another in the classroom, in study halls, and in the computer lab. Students, staff, and faculty join in cultural, entertainment, and community-building activities outside the classroom.
